26th annual One from the Heart Awards Breakfast
Event on 2016-10-13 07:30:00
Pathways friends and supporters gather to recognize outstanding leaders in hospice and health care, and to ensure that Pathways continues to provide high-quality patient and family-centered care with kindness and dignity.

Featured speaker Alexander McCall Smith, CBE,
FRSE is the author of more than 75 works of fiction
for adults and children. He is best known as the
creator of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
series, with central character Mma Precious
Ramotswe, the most famous fabricated
personage in all of Botswana.

Professor Emeritus of Medical Law at Edinburgh
University, McCall Smith is a respected expert on
medical law and bioethics, and has served on British
and international committees concerned with these
issues. After McCall Smith’s books took off about a
decade ago, he gave up his academic career to “boat,
travel, play music badly, and write.”

McCall Smith writes of the tender care provided by
hospice when a character in the Detective Agency series
dies of AIDS. “I know from personal experience the value
of the care and attention given to patients and their
families at a difficult time,” he explains. His central
character would agree: “We cannot walk away from
suffering,” Mma Ramotswe says. “We simply cannot.”
